On Monday, the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill returned to the House of Commons, and I know this is an issue that many people in our community care deeply about.

I have long supported calls to enshrine the principle of animal sentience in UK law and I welcomed this Bill, which will now become law.

But I do believe it is a missed opportunity to address long-standing animal welfare concerns, and I believe all animals deserve protection, whether they are pets, or live in the wild, in oceans or on farms. In my view the Government must continue to follow through on its promises for tougher laws.
