I was proud to secure a debate in Parliament to raise awareness about thalassaemia – a genetic blood disorder that affects many people in the UK, including here in Enfield Southgate which has the highest number of people with thalassaemia in the country.

In the UK, thalassaemia services are under resourced, underdeveloped, and understaffed. Patients have also reported that they feel their ethnicity is linked to below standard treatment and in some cases racism.

As Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Thalassaemia, I’m calling on the Government to raise awareness of thalassaemia among health professionals and the wider public to improve health outcomes for people with the condition.
