I was at the despatch box this week to oppose the dangerous Nationality and Borders Bill at report stage and third reading.

This Bill is a sham, and I was proud to voice Labour’s opposition to its draconian and outlandish measures that cost the taxpayer and fail to solve the problem of dangerous crossings.

I know many constituents are concerned about measures in this Bill, including proposals that allow the Home Office to deprive UK nationals of citizenship without warning. I shared my deep concerns about this and many other proposals in Parliament, in my final act as Shadow Immigration Minister.

I believe the Bill is a smoke-and-mirrors trick designed to deflect attention from the Conservative Government’s failings and incompetence in the area of asylum and refugee protection.

The Bill passed with support of Conservative MPs and will now progress to the House of Lords.
